Seoul, South Korea
The vibrant capital of South Korea, Seoul is a sprawling metropolis of over 9.7 million people, with nearly 26 million in the greater metropolitan area. This dynamic city seamlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology—5th century palaces stand in the shadows of gleaming skyscrapers, while traditional hanok villages nestle between ultra-modern shopping districts. The city is divided by the Han River, which flows through its heart, with 31 bridges connecting the northern and southern districts.
Notable landmarks include the Lotte World Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace—the largest of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty—and the neon-lit districts of Gangnam and Myeongdong.
Spring Valley, Washington DC
Spring Valley is an affluent residential neighborhood in Northwest Washington DC. Tucked away in the upper northwest corner of the city, this tranquil enclave is renowned for its winding tree-canopied roads, spacious Colonial and Tudor Revival homes, and verdant landscapes that offer a suburban sanctuary within the nation's capital. Developed primarily in the 1920s and 1930s on former farmland, Spring Valley exudes refined elegance with its generous lots, manicured lawns, and architecturally distinguished residences.
The neighborhood is home to American University, a prominent institution of higher learning, as well as numerous diplomatic residences and embassies that dot its quiet streets. Massachusetts Avenue forms the southern boundary of the district, while the Wesley Heights area borders to the east—creating an exclusive community where ambassadors, cabinet members, and Washington's established families have long made their homes.
Sapporo, Japan
The capital of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, Sapporo is a modern city of nearly 2 million people built on a distinctive grid pattern inspired by American cities. Founded in 1868, it's one of Japan's youngest major cities, yet it has grown into a vibrant hub known for its beer, ramen, and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival that attracts millions of visitors. Unlike Japan's ancient capitals, Sapporo feels refreshingly contemporary, with wide boulevards, modern architecture, and Odori Park—a 1.5-kilometer-long ribbon of green space that bisects the downtown area.
Winter transforms Sapporo into a frozen wonderland, with average snowfall exceeding 5 meters annually. The city's extensive underground walkway network, connecting subway stations and buildings, forms an underground city of sorts, hidden beneath the snow-covered streets.
Tomamu, Japan
Located in the heart of Hokkaido, Tomamu is a remote mountain resort area renowned for its dramatic alpine landscapes and world-class ski facilities. The centerpiece is the Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, dominated by two distinctive glass towers that rise incongruously from the snowy wilderness. The area experiences some of Japan's heaviest snowfall, with temperatures regularly plunging to -20°C or lower.
Each winter, the Hoshino Resort constructs the enchanting Ice Village—an ethereal complex of structures built from ice and snow. Visitors can explore an ice chapel, sip cocktails from frozen glasses at the ice bar, or wander through illuminated ice corridors that glow with ethereal blue light.
