Hang Son Doong Cavern, Vietnam

Deep beneath Vietnam's lush Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park lies Hang Son Doong—literally "Mountain River Cave"—the world's most massive underground chamber. This limestone giant is so enormous that 15 Great Pyramids of Giza could fit inside it, and a Boeing 747 could fly through its largest passages. Stretching over 3 miles (5 km) long and reaching heights of 660 feet (200 m), Son Doong boasts a volume of 38.5 million cubic meters. The cave formed relatively recently in geological terms—just 2-3 million years ago—when two rivers carved through Asia's largest limestone massif, a 400-million-year-old rock formation. Ha Long Bay

In the emerald waters of northeastern Vietnam, Hạ Long Bay—whose name means "descending dragon"—captivates visitors with thousands of limestone karsts and islets that rise from the sea like ancient guardians, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status. National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, Washington DC

ACTION EXCERPT - SIDEWINDER

The sicarios spread around the table, covering Caine from multiple angles. One stood across the table from him. The other two flanked him from several feet away.

“Hola, amigo,” the man standing in front of him said.

Caine made eye contact and nodded. He maintained a loose grip around the neck of his beer bottle.

“Gentlemen,” he replied, speaking Spanish. “Is there something I can help you with?”

“Raise your hands high and stand up. Slowly. We need to search you. You’re an American, right?”

“I am. Is that a problem?”

“Maybe, maybe not. We’ll find out soon.”

“Are you cops?” Caine asked.

“Do we look like cops? Stand up.”

The two sicarios flanking Caine pushed their suit jackets back to reveal pistols on their hips, but neither man drew. The right-side man still held the radio scanner in his right hand despite that being his gun hand based on the placement of his weapon.

Caine slumped his shoulders and made himself appear subdued and nonthreatening. He nodded. “Of course. I don’t know what the problem is, but I trust we can resolve this without any trouble. Is this about money?”

Caine stood.

Before he was fully upright, his left hand lashed out, whipping the beer bottle against the face of the left-side sicario. The bottle struck the man right between his eyes, hard enough to break the glass. The sicario grunted as his head snapped back. His hands shot up to cover his bleeding face, moving away from his gun. That made him Caine’s lowest priority for the next few seconds.

Caine didn’t stop moving. He drew his Glock, driving the pistol up and forward in lightning-fast motion. Without aiming, Caine snapped off two shots across the table. Blood exploded from the face of the sicario standing across from him.

Caine pivoted right as the sicario there took several steps back. The man dropped the radio scanner and drew his own weapon. He was fast—but not fast enough. Caine already had his Glock on line.

Caine’s finger reflexively milked the trigger. Two rounds struck the sicario’s forehead from ten feet away. Before the body hit the floor, Caine had already turned and pointed the Glock across his body. He double-tapped the left-side sicario as the man recovered from the bottle to the face.

Conscious of the guard posted at the entrance to the lounge, Caine turtled down and stepped left.

A bullet cracked past Caine’s head, close enough that he felt the overpressure disturb the air. He threw himself onto the floor a fraction of a second before more bullets screamed overhead. He thrust the Glock out and fired across the lounge, hitting the sicario center mass. The man stumbled, lost a step, and went down to a knee. He fired at Caine again. Bullets struck the floor less than a meter behind Caine. He tracked the sicario with the Glock’s green dot. Caine worked the trigger and controlled the recoil, firing until the man fell over onto his back.

Rising to his feet and sighting over the Glock, Caine performed a three-sixty sweep across the lounge.

“All call signs, Sidewinder Main,” Richter’s voice suddenly announced. “Hossein is in the wind. They hustled him aboard a Land Rover and took off with two identical vehicles. Overwatch is tracking them onto the highway now. We got him.”

“Roger.” Looking across the lounge, Caine’s eyes settled on the stairs at the far end of the patio. “I’m going after Mendoza. Condor Two, on me.”

“Roger, Condor One,” Tyler’s voice replied.

Swapping out mags on his Glock, Caine sprinted across the lounge toward the patio...

ACTION EXCERPT: TOKYO BLACK

‘Hey,’ Caine shouted in Japanese. ‘That’s not enough. What are you trying to pull here?’

It wasn’t true, but he knew he had to get their attention if he was going to move up the chain to Isato.

A deep voice shouted back, ‘Bakayarou, usero!’

Caine couldn’t help but smile. The voice had told him to go away, then called him an asshole.

‘Give me the rest or I call the police!’ Caine demanded.

He heard more fumbling behind the door, the sound of a latch turning. He pivoted his body towards the door as it swung open halfway. He used the momentum of his turn to launch a powerful kick at the door.

He heard a grunt of pain as the heavy metal door crashed into the person behind it. Caine immediately grabbed the edge of the money drawer, then yanked it backwards, ripping it from its socket.

The door bounced back open from the impact, and Caine stepped forward, kicking it open further. A man in a black suit staggered before him, blood gushing from his now-crushed nose.

Caine noticed two things right away. First, this man was not one of the yakuza who had walked past him in the pachinko parlor. And second, whoever he was, he was reaching across his blood-spattered shirt and slipping his hand into his jacket.

Caine charged forward, swinging the metal drawer in a powerful arc. The drawer knocked the man’s hand away from the gun, then cracked into his chin. His head snapped back, blood spraying through the air.

He tried to take a step backwards, but Caine grabbed the man’s shirt collar and pulled him in close. He drove his knee into the man’s groin twice, while slamming the metal drawer into his left side, striking the solar plexus. As the man crumpled, Caine heard a sharp crack.

Someone was shooting at him.

Using the incapacitated man to block the shots, Caine hunched low and surveyed the situation. At the far end of the room, another man in an identical black suit ducked behind a desk. Caine grabbed his hostage’s weapon as the other man popped up from behind his cover.

Crack! Crack! The other man fired again. The sound was loud but muffled, like someone clapping in a soundproofed room.

Caine felt the impact as the bullets slammed into the human shield he held in front of him. His hostage was dead weight now, and he couldn’t hold him up and still shoot. He let the body drop to the floor with a thud.

He was in fight mode now, his senses accelerated. Caine watched his assailant stand up from behind the desk in slow motion.

Caine hurled the drawer at him. The heavy chunk of metal flew through the air, smashing into the other man’s shoulder as he raised his gun to shoot. The impact threw off his aim, and Caine felt the bullets slice through the air next to his ear. He held his ground, raising his own pistol in front of him in a double-handed grip.

Crack! Crack! Crack! The pistol barked in his hands. Three crimson holes burst open in the man across the room…

ACTION EXCERPT: RED PHOENIX

Caine triggered the stun gun. The weapon crackled and popped as blue sparks leapt from the tip. He ran the sparking weapon across the first set of breakers. The metal switches popped and hissed. The sudden influx of electricity fried the delicate copper wiring inside each breaker.

The lights in the room flickered and dimmed, then went dark. A harsh electronic siren squawked to life and echoed through the hallway outside.

Caine’s mouth twisted into a grim smile. He triggered the weapon again and proceeded to fry the remaining breakers. A shower of glowing sparks illuminated the room for a few brief seconds. Then darkness settled over them once again.

Caine grabbed his hostage from the floor. ‘Next stop,’ he muttered as he led the man out into the hall.

Outside, the halls were dark, but not pitch-black. The power outage had triggered the building’s backup generators. Spinning red emergency lights cast rotating pools of crimson across the walls and floor.

He pushed Mole Face back the way they had come. Up ahead, he heard frantic shouting, barely audible above the squawking siren. They were approaching the room with the two guards.

Caine triggered the stun gun once more, jabbing it into Mole Face’s back. The man jerked and stumbled as the voltage coursed through his body. Caine threw him forward and he flew past the doorway, just as the first guard was exiting. The guard turned to look as the body fell past him. As he looked away, Caine pressed the trigger on the weapon again.

Nothing happened.

Damn, he thought. Battery must have discharged.

He wanted to avoid a gunfight for as long as possible. The sound of gunshots would carry even over the siren.

The guard rushed over and knelt down next to Mole Face. He ripped the hood off the twitching man.

‘Gau shen me gui? Hey, I know this guy. He works here!’

He turned and looked up, his eyes wide as Caine charged towards him. Caine tore the fire extinguisher off the wall as he lunged at the guard.

The uniformed man leapt to his feet. ‘Rhu qin zhe!’ he yelled. ‘Intruder! Who the hell are—’

Caine swung the metal cylinder in a sweeping arc. The blow struck the guard across the chin before he could finish his warning. The force of the impact spun the man around and he dropped to the floor like a stone.

Caine whirled around to face the second guard just as he exited the room. The man saw his partner slumped on the ground and drew his revolver from its holster.

He raised the pistol towards Caine, but he was too slow. Caine slammed the bottom of the extinguisher into the advancing man’s face. The blow struck with a dull, echoing thud. As his target stumbled backwards, Caine jabbed again. This time he used both hands to power the canister into the man’s gut. The guard bent forward from the impact, gasping for breath.

Caine took aim and depressed the handle of the extinguisher. A burst of white chemical smoke whooshed from the nozzle, blasting the dazed guard in the face. He stumbled backwards through the door. The extinguisher filled the small room around him with an impenetrable haze. Caine could hear the man coughing and wheezing within the thick cloud.

Holding his breath, Caine stepped into the room. Grabbing the top of the extinguisher with both hands, he swung it like a baseball bat. A metallic clang rang out as it connected with the coughing guard’s head. The man went silent, dropping to the floor.

Caine pivoted to his right. He slammed the extinguisher down on the knob of the open door. The heavy metal canister battered the knob clean off the lock assembly. Caine kicked it outside and left the room, slamming the door shut behind him.

He dropped the empty fire extinguisher, letting it clatter to the floor next to the unconscious bodies of Mole Face and the guard. Then he advanced towards the stairs. He checked his watch.

Six minutes to go…

PATTAYA, THAILAND

THE IRON WOLF OF HELL & ICE

Sometimes even writers find themselves at a loss for words. Such was the case when UK artist and Caine reader Marc Atkinson reached out to me on Twitter.

After reading Hell & Ice, Marc found himself inspired to create a unique piece of art that reflected the savage villain of that story. Piotr Zasko, known as the Iron Wolf, is a brutal Russian special forces commander, who wants to take a bite out of Thomas Caine… literally! And Marc perfectly captured the Iron Wolf’s savage appeal and chilling allure in his stunning 3D artwork.

What other things influence your work? Music, writing, etc?

I played in a few bands, old rock and roll stuff, Elvis, Johnny Cash and the like. I love a lot of different styles, in the gym its new York hardcore like Biohazard, sick of it all, real aggressive stuff, my usual listening is more Social Distortion, rancid to stuff like Jack Johnson and Oasis. Books I like were mostly horror in nature, Stephen King to the classics like Lovecraft and Poe. As a change of pace I found the Thomas Caine books and got hooked on that, so thank you! England holds a lot of influence to my style because there is such old stuff around us, in the north we had mining and shipbuilding, huge scale engineering. That and I love motorbikes and cars and that all feeds into this mechanical style.

What other projects are you working on now?

I’m working an a portrait of Steve Mcqueen, I.ve just finished one of Boba Fett from Star Wars, I’m writing some songs for a new music project ‘Deadwood Rattlesnakes’ think ZZ top and Waylon Jennings. Like most things in life I kinda just make it all up as I go.

DEPTH CHARGE: Location Report

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN…

Depth Charge, the new thriller in the Caine: Rapid Fire series, is launching soon! In my latest collaboration with author Aiden Bailey, we had a blast taking Thomas Caine to more international locations than in any of our previous books.

While a standalone story, Depth Charge is set a short time after the events of Sandfire. Many of the characters introduced in other books in the Thomas Caine series are also brought together here for the first time.

What has been particularly exciting about this book is most of the locations have been places either Aiden or I have visited. I drew on my travels in the United States, China, Colombia and Indonesia, while Aiden drew on his experiences in Bolivia, Peru, Hawaii and Indonesia. We’ve peppered the story with scenes and sights we experienced first hand.

Singapore

Singapore is a modern island nation in South East Asia on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. It is a technological, logistics, entertainment, tourism, shipping and finance hub and a global leader in so many aspects of modern life. The cultural diversity and security of the nation make Singapore, like Hong Kong, an ideal hub for international operatives like Caine.

Caine reunites with Rebecca and Tyler in Singapore after their grueling adventures through Asia and South America. But the dynamics of their relationships have changed, and not everything is as it seems…

These are only half the amazing locations we visited in Depth Charge! At nine countries and three continents in one book, we realized this is a new record in frequent flyer mileage for Caine.
