Lousiana Bayou, USA

Located about 35 miles South of New Orleans, the Louisiana Bayou stretches over a hundred miles, flowing through numerous small towns and communities. Its dark swamp waters and dense cypress tree groves are home to numerous wildlife species, from alligators and bears, to egrets and venomous snakes. Khartoum, Sudan

Khartoum is the capital city of Sudan and is home to over seven million people. The city sits at the confluence of the White Nile River, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile River, flowing west from Ethiopia. The area where the two rivers meet is known as al-Mogran, "the confluence." The Confluence is considered a sacred site, and photography is not permitted there without a special permit. One of the city's most famous structures is the Corinthia Hotel, a unique oval-shaped building nicknamed "Gaddafi's Egg," as it was built and financed by the Libyan government under Muammar Gaddafi's rule.

Sadly, Sudan has been wracked by violent civil war recently, and Khartoum was not spared from the devastation. Many of the landmarks and areas Caine visits in the city have since been damaged or reduced to rubble.

South Sudan

Formed in 2011, The Republic of South Sudan is officially the youngest nation on Earth. A landlocked country in East Africa, it is bordered on the North by Sudan, and the two nations have an uneasy history of war and conflict over the massive oil reserves located in the region. South Sudan has also suffered years of internal civil war, a brutal conflict which claimed nearly half a million lives and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

South Sudan's diverse landscape includes vast plains and plateaus, dry and tropical savannahs, inland floodplains, and forested mountains. The Nile River system runs through the country, flowing into a large swamp area known as the Sudd. Juba is the capital of the war-torn nation, and it is here that Caine’s ally, Doctor Nena Vasani begins to piece together the deadly scope of Simon Takuba’s plan…

The Sudd

This massive swamp is one of the world's largest wetlands and the largest freshwater wetland in the Nile Basin. Travel through the area is notoriously difficult, and for centuries, it has served as an impenetrable barrier, halting the progress of the Egyptians, Romans, and other empires into equatorial Africa. The Nuer and Dinka people use the sudd for agriculture, and their livestock graze on its lush grasslands. The swamp’s murky shallows are home to countless wildlife, including Nile Crocodiles and Hippos. Sadly, The long-running civil war in Southern Sudan seriously disrupted conservation efforts in the Sudd, and the widespread availability of weapons has encouraged poaching, including of elephants.
